Legalisation of Outdoor Weddings in England and Wales

A proposal to legalise outdoor weddings in England and Wales could pave the way for eco-ceremonies to take place for the first time. This new law could open up the choices available to couples and allow them to tie the knot on a beach, forest or even a mountaintop.

Under the current system, marriages can only take place through an authorised religious or civil official. The new bill aims to allow groups such as humanists to carry out ceremonies “anywhere meaningful to the couple including outdoors”.

The proposition is great news for any engaged couple, and will allow them to have the choice of a beautiful outdoor ceremony.

In Ireland, couples already have this choice available to them, and the gorgeous surrounds of our private woodland area on the grounds of the hotel has become a popular setting for wedding ceremonies at the hotel. Civil Ceremony Weddings in Dublin

In Ireland, more and more people are moving away from the traditional church wedding and are now opting for a Civil Ceremony or a Humanist Ceremony. Also, the Civil Partnership Act 2010 finally opened up the path for same sex couples to unite in a civil partnership, with the first ceremonies taking place in the Spring of 2011 (by the end of 2012, civil partnerships had been registered by 965 couples, and had taken place in every county in Ireland).

The huge increase in popularity for Civil Ceremonies and Civil Partnerships has altered the decision-making process for couples when choosing their wedding venue. Most wedding venues are registered to host civil ceremonies, and now couples are on the lookout for a beautiful backdrop for their ceremony as well as the perfect venue for the celebratory meal.

Here at The Lucan Spa Hotel, we offer couples a number of complimentary suites for civil ceremony use. The beautiful Boyne Suite provides a beautiful backdrop for your "I dos". The Boyne Suite features gorgeous chandeliers, plush private entrance and a woodland backdrop for your alter table.

Outdoor Ceremonies in Dublin

Another popular method of tying the knot is through a Humanist Wedding Ceremony. A humanist wedding is also now the only legal – non-Church wedding that you can have on a weekend, as civil ceremonies require a state registrar who only works Monday to Friday. A Humanist Wedding will allow for a more personal and unique ceremony, but very similar to a church wedding in its format, with the bride walking down the aisle, readings, music, and vows and exchanging of rings. The huge advantage of a Humanist Wedding is the fact that they can take place both indoors and outdoors.

The Lucan Spa Hotel provide stunning surroundings for outdoor ceremonies. Our private woodland on the grounds of the hotel opens up into a clear area perfect for wedding ceremonies.

Ideal for ceremonies for up to 120 guests, the outdoor woodland weddings of The Lucan Spa Hotel offer bride and grooms something unique and intimate for their special day. Real oak barrels, candle lanterns and a red carpet aisle provide a vintage and unique touch to the most romantic of settings.

In order to be legal, a humanist wedding requires an officially approved celebrant. Celebrants are based all around Ireland but most are willing to travel. The Lucan Spa Hotel recommends Tom Colton. Tom and his team have carried out a number of ceremonies at the hotel and offer couples a brilliant service for their day.

Tips for a stress free wedding

You have stacks of bridal magazines by your bedside. You have tasted every flavour of wedding cake known to man. Your ears hurt from listening to "advice" from family and friends. Who said planning a wedding was easy?

But it need not be all doom and gloom. Planning a wedding should be an exciting time, and by following these tips, you will have a stress-free run up to your perfect day.

  1. Don't over complicate yourselves with countless visits and meetings with suppliers. Make a list on
what is important for you for each supplier category and meet/visit the relevant suppliers following this list.
  2. If the hotel has a package deal but there are extras included that you don't want, let them know and ask for a discount. Venues should be flexible with there packages and menus, so choose a menu that you want exactly and don't feel under pressure to accept "black and white" packages and their prices.
  3. Look out for venues offering "All-Inclusive" wedding packages. These normally include the venue's wedding package as well as a number of recommended wedding suppliers like photographers, cake companies, florists etc at an all-in price. These packages are ideal for couples who are open to suggestions on all suppliers.
  4. Try not to get bogged down by pleasing everyone. Smile, nod and say "thanks, we will definitely think about that". Then just do what you wanted anyway. Always go with your first choice as this is your day.
  5. Organise a wedding folder, keeping lists of deposits paid, meeting arrangements etc. Try and organise the key items well in advance so you can relax the lead up to the day.
  6. If photos are your thing, don't scrimp on the photographer. Ask to see previous work before booking and if possible, previous weddings he/she has done at your venue. There can be a huge difference in quality of photographers, and it is key to pick the right one.
  7. In the run up to your wedding, try and arrange nights off with your partner where you don't talk/think about the wedding. Time to yourselves can be key to avoiding stress.
  8. Don't stress yourself out by reading stories of weddings gone wrong or other horror tales from bridezillas on wedding forums.
  9. Waiting for RSVPs can be a nightmare, so putting a stamped addressed envelope in the invitation can speed up the process.
  10. Take a moment alone with just the two of you on the day. After the main photographs are taken, both of you take yourselves off to the bridal suite and enjoy the 10 minutes of alone time.
  11. Lastly, and most importantly, enjoy your day. This is one of the most important times of your life, and enjoy the time spent around friends and family.
